As its botanical name (Populus tremula) suggests, the aspen was often referred to as the trembling tree. Its leaves shake vigorously in the slightest of breezes, making a soothing sound like ocean waves. Aspens are very tall yet bushing trees. They love water and can often be found beside streams, brooks and rivers. The swishing sounds of aspens that accompany the music on the CD were recorded in such an environment. However, the two that provided their, soulful music were growing in a very different place, a long way from such a rich supply of water. On the first occasion, I was fortunate enough to have my guitar with me. As I sat under the tree, I was carried away by the rustling of the leaves in the breeze. I began to hear a flute, a guitar, and some kind of metallic plucked instrument, which turned out to be the zither. There was no definite melody with this one, just a very strong overall impression of the soothing, shimmering energy of the tree. I found a tuning and a key that sounded right, then a rhythm, and a suggestion of a flute melody. As soon as I returned, I recorded the guitar, then, recalling the energy of the tree, out came the flute melody. It sounded amazing, hypnotic, plaintive, yet bright. However, I always felt there should be more. When the time was right I found another tree and the second part was revealed. It was actually growing through a hedge in a friend's front garden. Magical trees are everywhere! What I got from this tree was much lighter and brighter, but complemented the main part perfectly. I didn't have a guitar with me at that time, but the music was so distinctive that I had no trouble remembering it or playing it. If you have worries, or anxiety about anything the sound experience of the aspen will blow them away - literally.
