Rowan The rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) - also known as the mountain ash - is a very important tree to the British Isles and is the subject of many myths and legends. However, it seems to have found a more mundane and urban setting, namely new housing estates that were built in the 1960s. I have yet to find an example, in the wild. Indeed, it was on such a housing estate where the music of this beautiful compact tree first came to me. It was a warm summer's day when I looked out of my window to see and hear many birds noisily chirping in the rowan tree on the green outside my house at the time. I could feel its presence like a magnet, drawing me closer, inviting me in. I accepted the invitation and went to sit under it. Its energy was very calming and restful, yet also very bright, cheery, and sunny. In a word - heart-warming, like the colour of its orange - and more often red - berries. As I sat there with my eyes closed, basking in this warm energy, a tune began to surface. The first part was very simple, the second much quicker and more complex; then came the suggestion of an accompaniment, then a more minor part. I sat there for a while longer then went inside and played the phrase on the guitar. E major seemed to match what I had heard. I also heard recorders, and other guitar parts. I recorded a simple version of it, and apart from a few changes and additional parts, it is pretty much as it is on the final version. The tree has a very warm, inspiring energy. If you need inspiration this tree has it in abundance.
